The next form of B2B isn't humans doing business with humans — it's AI doing business with AI.
At WAIC on July 17, Alibaba 1688 announced it will launch the UTP Universal Trade Protocol at the end of this month. The protocol has an ambitious goal: to build unified trade infrastructure for global commerce in the A2A (Agent to Agent) era.
What does that mean? It means your purchasing AI agent directly talks to the factory's sales agent — inquires, compares prices, places orders, processes payments — the entire trade flow without human involvement. Previously, a procurement manager searched for products, asked for prices, negotiated terms on 1688. Going forward, your purchasing agent automatically connects with agents from hundreds of suppliers and completes price comparison and negotiation in seconds.
Why a Protocol? Without Standards, Even AIs Talk Past Each Other
Many people might ask: aren't AIs smart? Can't two AIs just chat? Why do we need a special protocol?
Because without unified standards, two agents simply can't communicate efficiently.
Imagine this: you're in apparel, your purchasing agent says "I need 1000 pure cotton t-shirts"; the factory's sales agent says "we make knitwear, MOQ 500 pieces, delivery time 15 days." Both AIs are speaking Chinese, but terminology differs, units differ, data fields differ — when you say "pure cotton," do you mean 95% cotton or 100%? When I say "delivery time," is that from sample approval or from payment?
Without a unified protocol, two agents spend massive amounts of time "aligning understanding" — just like two people from different industries talking past each other, taking forever to figure out what the other means. Way too inefficient.
UTP solves this. It defines standardized fields for product descriptions, pricing, inventory, delivery times, payment methods, after-sales terms — all agents connected to UTP speak the same language. So when two agents meet, they complete inquiry and price comparison in seconds and go straight to decision-making.
Who's Most Worried? Middlemen and Trading Companies
If UTP actually takes off, the group hit hardest won't be factories or buyers — it'll be trading companies and distributors in the middle.
In traditional B2B trade, what's the core value of traders? Information asymmetry — I know which factories are good, which are cheap, which are reliable, and you don't, so you come to me. But in the A2A era, agents can connect with hundreds of factories in one second — all prices, delivery times, quality data is transparent. Information asymmetry gets erased.
And AI negotiates harder than humans. A procurement manager haggles for half a day to get 5% off. An agent might extract floor prices from 10 suppliers in seconds. Traders who used to survive on "information gap + relationships" — neither of those works well in the AI era.
"Every time infrastructure gets standardized, a layer of middlemen gets eliminated. UTP won't be an exception."— Dawn Vision Editorial Assessment
Of course, not all middlemen will die. Those with supply chain integration capabilities, those who provide quality control and value-added services, those with capital and credit term capabilities — they'll still do fine. But "brick-moving" traders who purely arbitrage information gaps, buying low and selling high — their days are numbered.
UTP is still being pushed by just Alibaba 1688 right now. Whether it becomes an industry standard remains to be seen — Tencent, JD, Pinduoduo all have their own B2B businesses, and nobody wants to use a competitor's standard. But the direction is certain: A2A commerce is coming, and a unified protocol will come too. It's just a matter of when.
See you tomorrow.
