Google DeepMind与印度政府的Atal创新使命(Atal Innovation Mission, AIM)合作,正式推出了ATL Saathi——一款基于Gemini大模型的AI导师工具,专门为印度全国的Atal Tinkering Labs(ATL,阿塔尔创新实验室)的教育工作者设计。这个项目覆盖印度全国超过1万家学校的创新实验室,惠及超过100万名学生。
ATL Saathi到底做什么?

第一,项目引导。学生说"我想做一个能帮助农民的项目",AI导师会引导他们从发现问题、调研需求、设计方案、原型制作到测试迭代的完整流程,不是直接给答案,而是通过提问启发思考。
第二,实时答疑。学生在做项目的过程中遇到编程问题、电路问题、机械问题,可以随时问AI,AI会用他们听得懂的语言解释原理、给出调试建议、推荐学习资源。
第三,多语言支持。印度是一个语言极其多样的国家,很多偏远地区的学生英语不好,以前优质的STEM教育资源基本都是英文的,门槛很高。ATL Saathi支持12种印度本地语言,学生可以用母语学习和提问。
第四,教师赋能。它不是只给学生用的,也给老师用——帮老师设计课程、准备实验、评估学生项目,让那些没有STEM背景的老师也能带着学生做创新项目。
AI教育普惠的意义:缩小创新鸿沟
这个项目最值得关注的地方,不是技术有多先进,而是它在解决一个真正重要的问题:创新机会的不平等。
以前,能接触到优质AI教育、创新实验室、导师指导的,基本都是大城市私立学校的学生——他们的家庭能付得起学费、学校能请得起好老师、有资源参加各种科技竞赛。而偏远地区、低收入家庭的孩子,哪怕有天赋、有好奇心,也因为没有指导、没有资源而无法发挥潜力。

AI导师不可能完全替代优秀的人类老师,但它可以做到一件事:把最基本的指导和资源,送到人类老师去不了的地方。一个在印度东北部偏远村庄的孩子,以前可能从来没见过一个真正懂编程的人,现在他可以用自己的母语问AI"怎么写第一个Python程序""怎么让LED灯亮起来",然后得到耐心的、一步步的指导。
这才是AI真正应该做的事情:不是帮白领写PPT、帮程序员写代码(当然这些也有价值),而是把机会给到以前没有机会的人,让更多人的天赋和好奇心不被埋没。

Inclusive AI education is moving from slogan to reality.
Google DeepMind, in partnership with the Indian government's Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), has officially launched ATL Saathi — a Gemini-powered AI mentor tool designed specifically for educators at Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across India. The program covers over 10,000 school innovation labs nationwide, reaching more than 1 million students.
What Does ATL Saathi Actually Do?
Context: the Indian government's Atal Innovation Mission has established over 10,000 ATL innovation labs across the country, equipped with robotics, 3D printers, electronics components, open-source hardware, and other STEM education tools — aiming to cultivate the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
But there's a practical problem: many schools, especially in remote areas, lack qualified teachers who can guide students in using these tools. Labs are built, equipment is purchased, but there aren't enough mentors to walk students through projects, teach coding, or support invention. This isn't unique to India — STEM education worldwide faces teacher shortages.
ATL Saathi exists to solve this. It's a multilingual AI assistant (supporting 12 Indian languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu) that does four key things:
First, project guidance. A student says "I want to build something that helps farmers," and the AI mentor walks them through the full cycle: problem identification, needs research, solution design, prototyping, testing, and iteration — not giving answers directly, but asking questions to stimulate thinking.
Second, real-time Q&A. When students hit programming problems, circuit issues, mechanical questions mid-project, they can ask the AI anytime. It explains principles in accessible language, gives debugging suggestions, recommends learning resources.
Third, multilingual support. India is extraordinarily linguistically diverse. Many students in remote areas don't speak English well, and previously quality STEM resources were mostly English-only — a high barrier. ATL Saathi supports 12 Indian languages, so students can learn and ask in their mother tongue.
Fourth, teacher empowerment. It's not just for students — it helps teachers design lessons, prepare experiments, assess student projects, enabling teachers without STEM backgrounds to lead innovation projects with their students.
Why Inclusive AI Education Matters: Narrowing the Innovation Gap
The most notable thing about this project isn't how advanced the technology is — it's that it's solving a genuinely important problem: inequality of innovation opportunity.
Previously, access to quality AI education, innovation labs, and mentorship was largely limited to students at elite private schools in major cities — families that could afford tuition, schools that could hire good teachers, resources to enter science competitions. Kids in remote areas, from low-income families, even if they had talent and curiosity, couldn't realize their potential for lack of guidance and resources.

AI mentors can never fully replace great human teachers. But they can do one thing: deliver basic guidance and resources to places human teachers can't reach. A kid in a remote village in northeast India, who might never have met someone who actually knows programming, can now ask in their native language "how do I write my first Python program" "how do I make an LED blink" — and get patient, step-by-step guidance.
This is what AI should really be doing: not just helping white-collar workers write slides or programmers write code (valuable as those are), but delivering opportunity to people who never had it, so more people's talent and curiosity don't go to waste.
