Ten years. Siri finally got smart.

On July 13, Apple opened the first public betas of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and watchOS 27. The headliner was never in doubt — the all-new AI Siri. This wasn't a incremental upgrade. It was the most fundamental rebuild in Siri's 14-year history: powered by Google Gemini, equipped with full multi-turn conversation, capable of understanding complex context, operating across apps, and generating content.

In other words: Siri finally evolved from a "set alarms, check weather, set reminders" voice command tool into a real AI assistant.

Why This Siri Upgrade Is Different

Apple's AI lag over the past few years was there for all to see. While ChatGPT was writing code, doing analysis, and completing complex workflows, Siri was still stuck on "I'm not sure I understand." It's not that Apple didn't try — every AI update felt incremental: slightly better search, a little auto-summarization, some API openings — but Siri itself remained that "not-too-bright" voice assistant.

This time is different. The new Siri in iOS 27 brings three fundamental changes:

First: from single commands to multi-turn conversation. Previously Siri could only handle one instruction at a time, forgetting after each exchange. Now it can hold multi-turn conversations like ChatGPT, remember what you discussed earlier, clarify questions based on context, correct answers, and follow up.

Second: cross-app operations. The new Siri can invoke system-level APIs to complete cross-app tasks — like "send yesterday's photo to Zhang San on WeChat and put a 3pm meeting tomorrow on my calendar." Previously that required opening Photos, sharing to WeChat, finding the contact, sending; then opening Calendar, creating an event, setting the time — now one sentence handles it.

Third: screen content awareness. Siri can now understand what's currently on your screen — reading a webpage, ask "summarize the key points"; receiving a long email, say "reply that I agree to the meeting time"; viewing a photo, ask "where was this taken?" That's true "screen-level AI assistant" experience.

Siri as AI Gateway: Apple's Defensive Counterattack

Upgrading Siri into an AI assistant isn't just a feature update — it's a strategic counteroffensive for Apple.

What has been Apple's biggest anxiety over the past two years? AI eroding the gateway value of its app ecosystem. Previously, to do anything users opened the corresponding app — Didi for rides, Meituan for food, Ctrip for hotels. But if an AI assistant can handle those tasks directly, why open apps at all? If ChatGPT or Gemini becomes the intermediary between users and internet services, Apple's carefully built 15-year App Store ecosystem gets disintermediated.

That's why Apple set aside its "build everything in-house" pride and partnered with Google on Gemini — because in-house progress was too slow. Waiting another year or two for a truly capable AI Siri risked users already acclimating to ChatGPT app or third-party assistants, making it much harder to win back the gateway.

Choosing Google over OpenAI is also a telling decision. For one, Google as a search giant is a more controllable threat — it doesn't make operating systems or hardware, remaining fundamentally a service provider. For another, Gemini genuinely has advantages in multimodal and real-time performance, making it better suited for a system-level assistant.

Of course, the first public beta won't be perfect. Early user feedback reports slow responses, occasional comprehension errors, and limited third-party app support. But the direction is right — Siri is finally going from "gimmick feature" to the core of the iOS experience. When a billion iPhone users start habitually asking Siri for things, Apple holds onto the AI-era gateway.

This is a battle Apple can't afford to lose. Starting with iOS 27's AI Siri, the counteroffensive is officially on.
