$13.3 billion. Six months ago, that number was $6.6 billion.
European AI coding company Lovable has closed its Series C - $400 million, at a $13.3 billion valuation. Menlo Ventures and Scaleup Europe Fund led the round, with over a dozen institutions participating. From $6.6B at last December's funding round to $13.3B now took less than a year.
The point of this story isn't just another AI company's valuation going up - that kind of news happens every day now. The point is: Lovable is a European company.
The AI startup narrative used to be essentially a Silicon Valley narrative. OpenAI in San Francisco, Anthropic in San Francisco, Cognition in San Francisco, Cursor also US-based. AI's innovation center, capital center, talent center - all seemed concentrated in that one small patch of the Bay Area.
But Lovable's story tells you: the geographic dividend of AI entrepreneurship is spreading from a single point to the entire globe.
From Single-Point Explosion to Global Bloom
Why does Lovable matter? Not because its valuation is the highest - SpaceX acquired Cursor for $60B, Cognition is reportedly raising at $40B - $13.3B isn't the very top tier. But Lovable represents a trend: AI coding startup is no longer Silicon Valley's exclusive game.
Look at the global AI coding player map:
In the US: OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Code, SpaceX's Cursor, Cognition's Devin - the first tier, and the most watched.
In China: DeepSeek's Harness, Zhipu's CodeGeeX, ByteDance's Doubao Coding Assistant - leveraging the massive domestic developer market and cost advantages, growing extremely fast.
And Europe? In the past, Europe hasn't had a strong presence in AI. No standout foundation models, AI products were mostly copies of American ones. But Lovable changes that narrative - Europe now has its own AI coding unicorn, and its valuation has already crossed the threshold into the global first tier.
"When Europe also produces a $10B+ AI coding company, you know this startup wave has gone from a Silicon Valley wildfire to a global blaze." - A Global AI Startup Investor
Several reasons drive this. First, AI tools have lowered the barrier to entrepreneurship. Building a coding tools company used to require a huge engineering team and massive R&D investment. Now with AI, a few founders with AI-assisted development can ship competitive products in very little time.
Second, remote work has decentralized talent. Previously, to do AI startups you had to move to Silicon Valley to hire. Now developers worldwide can collaborate remotely - London, Berlin, Paris, Prague - any city with technical talent can grow AI startups.
Third, globalized capital. American VCs invest in European companies; European funds back American projects. Capital flows no longer respect geographic borders. Wherever the good projects are, the money follows.
What It Means for Ordinary Founders
Lovable's story is an important signal for ordinary founders who aren't in Silicon Valley or tier-1 Chinese cities.
The old startup logic was: to do big things, you had to be in a hub city, you had to be in the right circles, you had to know the right people. Geography determined your access to resources, and it determined your ceiling.
But in the AI era, that logic is being rewritten.
You don't need to be in Silicon Valley to build a $10B+ company. You don't need a fancy founding team background - the product speaks for itself. You don't need to know investors - organic growth from a good product brings them to you.
The key? Product-market fit. In AI, good products spread on their own - developer communities talk, users pay, investors come knocking. Geographic barriers are being eroded, bit by bit, by the connectivity of the digital age.
Of course, this isn't to say geography doesn't matter at all. Silicon Valley still has the densest talent, the most active capital, the most mature ecosystem. China's tier-1 cities have similar advantages. But -
If you're an indie developer in a second-tier city, in a small European town, anywhere with internet - Lovable's story tells you: you have a shot. Not the comforting kind of "shot," but a real shot at building something billion-dollar-scale.
The bar for AI startups has lowered, but the success rate hasn't improved. Only a few ever make it. But at least the game is no longer the privilege of a few people in a few places.
When AI coding unicorns emerge from Silicon Valley, Beijing, Europe, and beyond - that's when this revolution truly begins.
See you tomorrow.
