Cursor
Cursor's all-hands meeting turned into a farewell party.
According to a The Information exclusive, management told employees point-blank: the $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere by SpaceX could close as early as next Friday, no later than the end of August. The bigger gut punch came next: the Cursor brand will be phased out from new products over the coming months.
The AI coding unicorn — four MIT kids, two years, 50,000 enterprise customers, over a million paying users — is about to be dismantled, digested, and renamed. Reddit's r/vibecoding called it "the most insane AI coding move yet."
What $60 Billion Buys: Coding Data and an Entry Point
The deal began brewing on June 16, when a SEC 8-K filing revealed SpaceX would acquire Anysphere in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion — zero cash. Back then the industry asked "why does Musk want an editor?". Now the answer is obvious.
Start with Musk's weakness. Grok's enterprise adoption sits at just 7%, and coding is the biggest blank spot in his AI map. Meanwhile, Claude Code has driven Anthropic to $14 billion in annualized revenue, and OpenAI's Codex CLI crossed a million developers in its first month. Cursor holds 50,000 enterprise customers, over a million paying users, and a mountain of real-world coding data generated daily — Grok 4.5 was already fine-tuned on Cursor data.
Most of that $60 billion pays for the coding data and for the "software production entry point" itself.
The integration plan is brutally complete: Cursor will not operate as an independent entity. Teams get dispersed into SpaceXAI divisions, and employees will migrate into SpaceX's Slack workspace and reporting lines within days of closing. Its unreleased general AI agent, codename "Sand," will most likely ship under the Grok Bot brand — not guaranteed, but it definitely won't be called Cursor.
How Long Can "Model Neutrality" Survive
The most uncomfortable moment at the all-hands: an employee stood up and asked why the brand was becoming Grok. Because earlier this year, CEO Michael Truell had assured staff that SpaceXAI viewed Cursor's brand identity and enterprise relationships as a "key asset." Months later, "key asset" became "phase out."
What the developer community actually fears isn't the name — it's the faith Cursor was built on: model neutrality. Use Claude if you want, use GPT if you want, Cursor doesn't care. That's the core reason many teams chose it over GitHub Copilot. Once your parent company owns a frontier model, "we don't care who you use" can never be believed again.
Nothing changes in developers' editors today. The real question is 6 to 12 months out: will Cursor treat all models equally, or slowly become a piece of the SpaceX stack? Musk has already set a $100 billion annualized revenue target by December, with Cursor's consolidation as one of the planks. And for indie developers, a footnote to an era has been written: a company that didn't train its own model once proved you could sit at the center of the table — but at the center of the table, the people who make the chips ultimately own the game.
See you tomorrow.
