第一部分是「新闻编辑室AI大师班系列」，延续了WAN-IFRA与OpenAI此前成功合作的模式，汇聚国际专家与从业者，分享实用知识、案例研究与实施策略。课程覆盖新闻机构的核心优先级：编辑工作流、受众互动、产品开发、营收增长、组织变革，以及负责任的AI采用。大师班已于8月5日启动。
第二部分是「新闻编辑室AI催化计划」，将为10家经AIRPPU遴选的乌克兰新闻机构提供更深入的实操支持，帮助它们识别高影响力用例、制定实施路线图，并量身定制AI解决方案进行试点。所有参与机构还将获得OpenAI API额度，用于开发定制化的新闻编辑室工具。催化计划将于9月17日正式启动。

Ongoing war, economic pressures and disruption to daily life have created unprecedented challenges for independent media in Ukraine. On September 7, OpenAI, together with the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU), announced a new initiative: building practical AI capabilities to help Ukrainian news organizations improve sustainability, efficiency and resilience.
A Two-Track Program: From Masterclasses to Deep Catalyst
The project consists of two complementary components, forming a complete path from knowledge sharing to deep implementation.
The first is the Newsroom AI Masterclass Series, building on prior successful collaborations between WAN-IFRA and OpenAI. It brings together international experts and practitioners to share practical knowledge, case studies and implementation strategies. Topics span critical newsroom priorities: editorial workflows, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, organizational change and responsible AI adoption. The masterclasses launched on August 5.
The second is the Newsroom AI Catalyst, which will provide deeper, hands-on support to ten Ukrainian news organizations selected by AIRPPU. It will help them identify high-impact use cases, develop implementation roadmaps, and pilot tailored AI solutions. All participating organizations will also receive OpenAI API credits to build custom newsroom tools. The Catalyst program officially launches on September 17.

The Logic of Technical Assistance in Wartime
The significance of this partnership goes far beyond technological empowerment. In times of war, independent journalism does more than report events — it safeguards the public record and ensures that Ukraine's story is told by Ukrainians.
Stig Ørskov, CEO of WAN-IFRA, noted that supporting Ukrainian media has been a core commitment for the organization since the full-scale invasion in 2022. He mentioned that the partnership with OpenAI, which since 2024 has enabled publishers worldwide to test, question and shape how AI is used in news, can now contribute to that shared commitment in Ukraine together with AIRPPU.
Tom Rubin, Chief of Intellectual Property and Content at OpenAI, emphasized that independent journalism plays a vital role in helping communities stay informed, especially during times of war, crisis and uncertainty. "By sharing practical knowledge, building on prior successes, and helping news organizations leverage the technology, we hope to contribute to a stronger and more sustainable future for independent journalism in Ukraine."
AI and Journalism: From Efficiency Revolution to Resilience Building
On a broader level, this program reflects the evolving role of AI in journalism. Early discussions focused on whether AI would replace journalists. Today, the industry consensus is shifting in another direction: AI should give time back to journalists, allowing them to focus on the work that truly requires human judgment and insight.
This is precisely the core point emphasized by AIRPPU CEO Oksana Brovko — "and most importantly — it should give journalists back time to do journalism." In a wartime environment of information overload and misinformation, the efficiency and resilience of independent media are themselves a public good.
